Fox & Friends host Elisabeth Hasselbeck has been taking some heat over the past couple of days for asking a former NYPD officer if Sandra Bland, who died in jail of an alleged suicide, could have used her lit cigarette as a weapon against the officer who arrested her. Wednesday morning, The View' s Whoopi Goldberg defended her "buddy" and former co-host against accusations of "racism. " "Somehow, it's no longer OK to pose a question that will give you an answer in order to best understand what's going on, " Goldberg said, after playing the clip. "We've been friends for about seven, eight years and she has not asked me to pick any cotton. " "People love to throw that phrase around, 'You're a racist, you're this, you're that, '" she added. "It is not racist to ask a question. " Similarly, Raven-Symoné said, "There's a lot of people of color that feel like white people shouldn't ask certain questions because they don't understand it and they don't feel like you're being sensitive to it, and I don't think that's fair. "

We don't think this is a fight you want to start, Elisabeth. The curious death of Sandra Bland in a Texas jail cell is just the latest example of proposed police brutality in America, but it seems as though some people are trying to place blame on the victim. Yet again. Elisabeth Hasselbeck is known for her outrageous Conservative viewpoints, but on FOX & Friends this week, the anchor questioned whether or not Sandra deserved to be arrested for potentially using a cigarette as a weapon against the officer. If you're unfamiliar with the case, 28-year-old Sandra was arrested by 30-year-old trooper Brian Encinia in Waller County, TX on July 10 after he stopped her for switching lanes without a signal and subsequently assaulting him — even though eyewitnesses say Brian was actually the one who kicked Sandra to the ground. [ Related: Elisabeth Returns To FOX After Cancer Scare] Three days later, Sandra was found dead in her cell, with police claiming she committed suicide by hanging, which was supported by the medical examiner.
"I didn't find it offensive at all. I felt like she was asking a provocative question as a journalist on a news program and if Matt Lauer had asked this question, would we still be having this conversation? " Perez said. Bland allegedly hanged herself in her jail cell after the arrest, but many don't believe she took her own life, including members of her family. Dashcam video from the arresting officer's car was recently released, and a recording from the jail's surveillance cameras show that Bland was alive when she was brought in for her mugshot, something that has been disputed and speculated about at length online in recent days.
"If he indeed felt it could be a potential threat, was that the wise thing to do? " Her question was posed to former NYPD officer John Rafferty, who by and large condemned officer Brian Encinia for mishandling the situation. He did acknowledge that it was technically possible for Bland to have gone at Encinia with a cigarette, but added that it was pretty much the officer's fault the situation had escalated to that point at all.
