The 1918 influenza epidemic claimed 8, 500 lives in Chicago from September to November 1918, including two nursing graduates. In 1921, Dr. Joseph Brennemann became the chief of staff, serving until 1940. One of America's most respected and renowned pediatricians, he was one of the most important physician leaders responsible for CMH's steady growth. The first full-time salaried physician at CMH (1930), he oversaw substantial expansion of both physical facilities and physician staff. New clinics included orthopedics, cardiology, syphilis, diabetes, and nephritis. The Martha Wilson Memorial Pavilion opened in 1926 with 134 beds, including 36 private beds, the first at CMH, and remained open until 2012. On the 1886 building site, the Nellie A. Black Building opened in 1932 for nurses' residence, and the Deering Building for interns in 1933—both with tunnels to the hospital. The Thomas D. Children under five accounted for most Chicago deaths, reaching 70. 7 percent in 1871, exceeding other cities. Tainted milk, food, and water all contributed to childhood mortality. Child labor was also a serious problem. No Illinois health care facility was devoted to children before Julia Porter opened her hospital in 1882. Only Dr. Mary Thompson's Chicago Hospital for Women and Children, founded in 1865 (rebuilt after the Great Fire as the Mary Thompson Hospital) for women and children of the respectable poor, with a capacity of 14 had a few children's beds. Chicago had no practitioners of the new specialty of pediatrics. Julia Porter opened her eight-bed hospital (Maurice F. Porter Memorial Hospital) in a Lincoln Park building she owned (on the southeast corner of Belden Avenue and Halsted Street, later the site of CMH's Belden Building) to provide free care to children 3–13 years old irrespective of race, creed, or ability to pay. She then purchased the northwest corner of Fullerton Avenue and Orchard Street, where a 20-bed hospital opened in 1886, expanding in 1896 to 50 beds.
